Banach's Lacture Part 2

Most of the time i don't even know what i am doing.

Now that i look back into my past i realized that i have done many things that i can't even explain. Some say that there is a reason for everything but i disagree. I guess part of not knowing why i do certain things is a part of me. Would that be an example of absolute freedom? I mean i am being who i am... right?

One question that is constantly on my mind when i am reading Banach's writing is why do we need so much? Couldn't we just be happy with what we have? Banach is always trying to tell us to find the deeper meaning of things but why can we just be pleased with what we do understand. In my p.o.v. i think that we should just try to improve ourself as we live our lives in this world and to keep this simple. i mean why make things so complicated?

Banach is always talking about absolute freedom that is insides of us that we need to find but what about freedom on the outside? This remains me of a question written by Manley. It states: "If you aren't politically or physically free, can you still be mentally free?" In my opinion i feel that you can be mentally free even if you are not phyiscally free and even if you are mentally free you might not be physically free. For example, i feel like the that lives in the U.S. are the ones that has the most political and physically free yet i still hear about people being paranoid in the U.S. which is what consider not mentally free.
In conclusion, I feel that is doesn't matter is we are "absolute individuals" or not, just be happy and live your life.

  1. The first remark you made already puts a question in my head. How can you have absolute freedom if you are not even aware of all the choices you make? My opinion still stands that there are many internal things that are not under one's control. My question can also apply to animals who are not really aware of anything they are doing. Do animals have absolute individuality and freedom or do we have to look at animal existence in a completely different way than human existance?
Going back to the post, I understand where you are coming from in the second paragraph. Understanding one's existence is not neccessary or really even possible. However, there are certain people that want to know their exact place in the world. It can't hurt to try to learn a little more about your existence, but I think anyone who thinks they know their exact place in the world cannot be right.
I think that me, you, and Banach would all agree that physcial freedom and mental freedom are two completely different things. I basically do not believe in absolutes and this includes absolute freedom, mental or physical. Freedom is something that varies by circumstance. As you say at the end, if you are happy with your life, then thats good for you. Happiness can be acheived no matter how free you are.

  2. Julie,

Your blog raises a lot of questions within me.

To say that it is "human nature" to long to know what we do not is not accurate in my mind. If we are all on "our islands of subjectivity" than saying human nature exists would be inaccurate right?

"One question that is constantly on my mind when I am reading Banach's writing is why do we need so much?"

I agree why do we as people want to know the answers to everything? I guess the saying ignorance is bliss doesn't sit well with people anymore. I think that there is a reason as to why we don’t know the answers to these "big" questions, it's because there isn't one.

You can’t make emotions into something tangible and objective that everyone can look at and relate to, everything is different depending on the person.

I like that you are questioning Banach's fundamentals, I also don't think there is a reason to dictate what is freedom and individuality. Who knows the answer? No one. So why does Banach constantly try to say that what he is trying to sell to us the readers as truth? What does he really know anyways? I can say what the meaning of life is and act as though my views are the truth but that does not mean that it really is.

Now that we have read more of his lecture Mr. Banach is getting on my nerves.

Anyways I liked your post a lot and keep up the good writing!
